BYD has unveiled a flash-charging system that charges EVs in 5-8 minutes, aiming to match traditional refueling times. BYD, China’s leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, recently introduced an ultra-fast EV charging system capable of delivering a full charge in just five to eight minutes, a time comparable to traditional fuel refilling. The company plans to establish over 4,000 charging stations across China to facilitate its adoption. The acceleration in EV sales is notable, with a 40% growth last year in battery-powered and hybrid vehicles, enhancing China’s shift from gasoline.
The latest technology provides an impressive range, with BYD’s 1 megawatt flash chargers delivering enough energy for approximately 400 kilometers (nearly 250 miles) of travel in five minutes. The CEO, Wang Chuanfu, emphasized the importance of minimizing charging time to match fuel refilling durations, addressing concerns of EV drivers regarding the accessibility of charging infrastructure.
Additionally, BYD’s innovative flash-charging system incorporates self-developed silicon carbide chips, enabling operation at voltage levels up to 1,500V. The Blade lithium-iron phosphate battery, also developed by BYD, is regarded as one of the safest and most efficient batteries available, attracting interest from other manufacturers, such as Tesla.
In terms of production, BYD reported manufacturing 4.3 million new energy vehicles in the previous year, marking a substantial increase of 41%, encompassing both battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. With its stocks rising nearly 50% over the past six months, BYD’s more affordable models, such as the Seagull priced at around $12,000, cater to a broader market while its premium models can reach approximately $40,000.
Though BYD has recently surpassed Tesla in battery-powered vehicle production for 2024, challenges persist, particularly regarding product quality. The New Energy Vehicle Initial Quality Study by JD Power ranked some of BYD’s models poorly, illustrating the ongoing competition within the EV market as companies like Tesla, BMW, and Volkswagen increase their market presence.
