One resident of Sanaa described the strikes, saying, “The explosions were violent and shook the neighborhood like an earthquake, terrifying our women and children.” In response, the Houthis labeled the attacks as a “war crime,” asserting that they are equipped to escalate if necessary.
Trump indicated that the Houthis’ threats against shipping in the Red Sea would not be tolerated, stating he would employ overwhelming force until objectives are met. His social media message emphasized the urgency, declaring, “YOUR TIME IS UP, AND YOUR ATTACKS MUST STOP, STARTING TODAY.”
Moreover, Trump warned Iran, asserting, “Do NOT threaten the American People, their President… or Worldwide shipping lanes.” He cautioned that failure to heed these warnings would result in serious repercussions.
In contrast, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi challenged the US stance, stating on social media that the US lacks authority over Iranian foreign policy, urging an end to violence in Yemen instead.
The Houthis, having gained control over significant portions of Yemen over the last decade, have recently intensified attacks on shipping following the onset of the Israel-Hamas war, claiming solidarity with Palestinians. To date, the Houthis have reportedly targeted US warships 174 times and commercial vessels 145 times in 2023 alone.
