Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of Telegram, has returned to Dubai after being arrested in France seven months prior due to allegations that his messaging app facilitated criminal activity. Despite the ongoing investigation, a prosecutor confirmed that Durov’s judicial supervision had been suspended from March 15 to April 7, allowing for his departure.
Durov highlighted on his Telegram channel that he appreciates the support from the investigative judges, his legal team, and the global community surrounding him. He expressed, “The process is ongoing, but it feels great to be home.” Durov, who has dual citizenship in the UAE and France, flew from Le Bourget Airport in Paris to Dubai, covering a distance of approximately 3,300 miles.
Arrested in August after landing in France, Durov faced charges linked to allegations of not moderating criminal uses of Telegram, which include drug trafficking and fraud. In response, Durov labeled the arrest as “misguided” and reflexively affirmed that Telegram does not condone criminal activity on its platform.
Durov acknowledged the impact of illegal activities by a minority of users on the overall perception of Telegram, which has nearly a billion users. To combat this, he outlined intentions to improve the app’s moderation practices, committing to work closely with organizations like the Internet Watch Foundation to flag and eliminate illegal content.
Previously, Durov had resisted Russian government pressures to restrict certain user freedoms on social media, leading to his departure from Russia in 2014. He remains a prominent figure in the tech industry, championing user privacy and freedom of expression.
