Sudan’s deputy head of the Sovereign Council, Malik Agar, indicated the country’s plans to rejoin IGAD and the African Union during a visit to Djibouti. Agar delivered a letter from leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, emphasizing Sudan’s commitment to reinstate its memberships after previous suspensions following a military coup and objections to RSF participation in regional summits.
On a recent visit to Djibouti, Malik Agar, the deputy head of Sudan’s Sovereign Council, expressed the country’s intention to rejoin the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the African Union. Agar presented a letter from army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to Djibouti’s President Ismail Omar Guelleh, who holds the presidency of IGAD. The letter focused on enhancing bilateral relations and Sudan’s commitment to reactivating its membership in these organizations.
Sudan had previously suspended its IGAD membership on January 20, 2024. This decision was in response to the controversial participation of Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemetti, at a summit in Uganda. Additionally, Sudan’s membership in the African Union was halted following a military coup on October 25, 2021, when al-Burhan, with Hemetti’s support, took power.
Sudan’s leadership is actively seeking to regain its position in regional entities like IGAD and the African Union after suspensions related to political turmoil. The recent diplomatic moves emphasize a focus on reestablishing ties and collaboration in the region, showcasing a clear commitment to restoring Sudan’s regional standing.
