The South Sudanese government has confirmed the presence of Ugandan military forces, specifically the Ugandan People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), after previously denying their deployment. Information Minister Michael Makuei Lueth cited a longstanding bilateral security agreement aimed at addressing threats as the basis for their entry. The UPDF’s role includes providing technical and support assistance under a military accord initially established to combat the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA).
The announcement follows a week of denials from the South Sudanese government, which came after Uganda’s military disclosed its presence in Juba to protect President Salva Kiir. This situation revisits Uganda’s previous controversial military involvement during South Sudan’s internal conflict from 2013 to 2016.
Makuei remarked that such military collaboration is not uncommon, comparing it to past U.S. military operations in South Sudan aimed at eliminating the LRA. He insisted that UPDF units are aiding the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) and stressed the mutual defense obligations of the pact, dismissing criticism as baseless.
In addition to the military discussions, Makuei addressed IGAD’s recent resolution, urging the release of detained individuals linked to First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar, barring any strong evidence against them. He indicated that any officials stripped of immunity would be investigated for alleged insurrection attempts, stating that the innocent would be released while the guilty would face legal consequences.
Furthermore, Makuei warned the White Army militia, affiliated with Machar’s SPLA-in-Opposition, to vacate Nasir County to avoid military confrontations. He attributed the destabilization of the Upper Nile area to the White Army and its reformed factions, asserting that any civilians remaining in conflict zones would face appropriate measures. He confirmed government airstrikes aimed at armed threats but denied targeting civilians.
