Sheryl Hermonstine has been elected as the new President of the AAG, securing five votes. Other newly elected officials include Mark Scott, Mayfield Taylor-Trim, Dwayne Carter, and Niall Stanton. The election was impacted by absences and abstentions, raising concerns about governance in the organization.
The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) has elected Sheryl Hermonstine as the new President during an Annual General Meeting held at the National Racquet Centre in Georgetown. Hermonstine received five votes in the election, while Dr. Ariane Mangar secured one. It was noted that several clubs chose not to participate in the voting, and the incumbent Aubrey Hutson did not attend the elections.
According to the AAG’s constitution, nominees who are absent must submit a letter expressing their intention to run, handed to the Returning Officer at the time of elections. Hermonstine previously served as the First Vice President and assumed the role of acting President following Hutson’s suspension in 2023.
Other newly elected officials include Mark Scott as First Vice President, Mayfield Taylor-Trim as Second Vice President, Dwayne Carter as Treasurer, and Niall Stanton as Assistant Treasurer. Additionally, committee members consist of Dr. Ariane Mangar, Thelson Williams, Tyrone Smith, Osafo Dos Santos, and Towanna McAlmont.
The newly formed executive committee re-appointed James Cole as General Secretary, with Kenisha Headley as the assistant general secretary. Emily Dodson, an attorney-at-law, served as the Returning Officer during the elections, which followed a series of public disputes that have brought attention to governance issues within Track and Field.
Sheryl Hermonstine’s election as AAG President marks a significant leadership change within the organization. The new executive lineup also includes experienced members who aim to address ongoing governance challenges in Track and Field. The elections’ controversies highlight the necessity for improved engagement and adherence to procedural norms among member clubs.
