Nigeria Customs Confiscates 916 Kegs of Fuel in Anti-Smuggling Operation

The Nigeria Customs Service has seized 916 kegs of fuel worth ₦22.9 million in ongoing operations against fuel smuggling in Adamawa State. This operation comes shortly after another significant seizure in Taraba State. The NCS emphasizes its commitment to preventing economic sabotage and urges public cooperation in reporting smuggling activities.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intensified its crackdown on fuel smuggling with the recent seizure of 916 kegs of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) valued at ₦22.9 million. This operation was executed by the strategic enforcement unit, Operation Whirlwind, in Adamawa State, targeting notorious smuggling corridors. The kegs, each containing 25 liters, were officially revealed in a press conference on March 14, 2025, by ACG Hussein Ejibunu,
who identified their total volume as 22,900 liters.

The operation was praised for its intelligence-driven execution, showcasing the NCS’s commitment to uphold the nation’s economic integrity. This successful intervention is part of a broader effort following another major seizure of 1,149 jerrycans of PMS totaling 34,470 liters, confirmed by Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi on March 13, 2025, in Taraba State.

ACG Ejibunu emphasized the need to address the motivations behind PMS smuggling, highlighting economic inequalities and the temptation of quick profits as primary reasons. Under the leadership of Comptroller-General Adeniyi, the NCS aims to dismantle these illegal networks to make smuggling a high-risk and unprofitable endeavor.

In recognition of the efforts by the Operation Whirlwind operatives, Ejibunu expressed gratitude, stating, “I extend my profound appreciation to the officers and men of Operation Whirlwind for their courage… Your dedication reinforces public confidence in our capacity to safeguard Nigeria’s economic sovereignty.” He encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activities to Customs, emphasizing the importance of collective vigilance against economic subversion.

The Nigeria Customs Service’s operation in Adamawa State highlights their ongoing commitment to combat fuel smuggling. With the recent confiscation of 916 kegs of PMS valued at ₦22.9 million, and previous seizures in Taraba State, the NCS is determined to dismantle smuggling networks. They call for public cooperation in reporting suspicious activities to enhance these efforts.
