The Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Limited has launched a youth empowerment initiative aimed at enhancing technological skills in the North-West region of Nigeria. This program seeks to provide advanced tech skills and improve broadband access, focusing particularly on rural areas.
Scheduled for April 7 to 11 in Dutse, Jigawa, the initiative includes a Space-Tech Hackathon and Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) training for university students, startups, and local innovators from states such as Kaduna, Kano, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, and Jigawa.

NIGCOMSAT previously executed a similar program in the North-East, with a Space-Tech Hackathon hosted in Yola, Adamawa State, from February 24 to 28, which emphasized grassroots innovation in satellite technology.
NIGCOMSAT’s Managing Director, Jane Egerton-Idehen, indicated that the five-day event would offer participants mentorship and hands-on experience in satellite technology. She emphasized, “The hackathon provides participants with a platform to identify challenges, generate ideas, develop prototypes, and receive expert mentorship.”
Additionally, the winning team of the hackathon will gain entry into the NIGCOMSAT Accelerator Programme Cohort 2025, receiving ongoing support for their projects. Furthermore, 100 youths will undergo specialized training in VSAT installation, promoting broadband access in underserved communities.
Egerton-Idehen stressed the initiative’s primary objective of inspiring technological innovation, addressing community challenges, and mitigating youth unemployment in Nigeria. The North-West Hackathon and VSAT training will be co-hosted by Jigawa State and NIGCOMSAT Ltd.
The NIGCOMSAT initiative aims to enhance technological skills and broadband access in Nigeria’s North-West region by offering training and mentorship through a Space-Tech Hackathon. By engaging local innovators and providing specialized training, NIGCOMSAT is working to inspire innovation and reduce youth unemployment, highlighting the importance of technology in community development.
