The Maragra sugar mill’s operation is delayed due to the rehabilitation of the Incomati River dam, affecting over 5000 workers who became unemployed after flooding two years ago. Government officials are negotiating with new shareholders to resume operations. Secretary Henriques Bongece visited the site, anticipating a revival in sugar production.
The rehabilitation of the Incomati River water protection dam in Manhiça district has encountered delays, impacting the reopening of the Maragra sugar mill. This facility ceased operations two years ago due to extensive flooding that inundated the surrounding cane fields. As a result, over five thousand employees lost their jobs.
Currently, government officials are in the process of engaging with potential new shareholders who are expected to revitalize the sugar production initiative, thereby reinstating employment opportunities for the affected workforce. To evaluate the progress, Secretary of State for Maputo Province, Henriques Bongece, conducted a site visit to the project. He expressed optimism regarding the restoration of sugar production at Maragra.
The Maragra sugar mill’s reopening is contingent upon the rehabilitation of a crucial water protection dam, which has been stalled. This situation not only affects sugar production but also leaves a significant number of workers unemployed. Engagement with potential new shareholders may provide a pathway to restore operations and employment.
