Kalle Rovanpera Aims for Strong Comeback at Safari Rally Kenya

Kalle Rovanpera aims to revive his WRC title hopes at the Safari Rally Kenya. After struggling with new tyres early in the season, he has yet to reach the podium. Currently third in the rankings, Rovanpera seeks to close the 30-point gap to leader Elfyn Evans, optimistic about the gravel tyres and the support of his team, including deputy principal Juha Kankkunen.

Kalle Rovanpera, the two-time World Rally Champion, is determined to improve his standings in the World Rally Championship (WRC) at the upcoming Safari Rally Kenya. He acknowledged the difficulties faced at the beginning of the season due to the new Hankook control tyres introduced for 2025. Although he is expected to contend for a third consecutive title, Rovanpera has yet to make it onto the podium, with his best finish being fourth in Monte Carlo and fifth in Sweden.

Despite his challenges, Rovanpera currently sits third in the championship standings, albeit 30 points behind his teammate Elfyn Evans, the current points leader. “Now we go on gravel a new tyre again and something new to learn,” he said, emphasizing his previous successes in the Safari Rally, having won two of the last four editions. Rovanpera expressed hope for a strong performance, indicating that the gravel surface presents a new opportunity.

During a recent pre-event test in southern Europe, Rovanpera provided positive feedback about the gravel tyres, stating that the test was crucial to achieve a good balance with the car. He described the Safari Rally as unique, highlighting its unpredictable nature while committing to push hard for a good result. The Toyota team principal, Jari-Matti Latvala, is optimistic that the gravel tyres will better suit Rovanpera’s driving style.

Due to conflicting engagements, Latvala will not attend the rally, and four-time world champion Juha Kankkunen will assume his responsibilities. Rovanpera shared his enthusiasm about Kankkunen’s presence, noting their friendship and his wealth of experience. Rovanpera believes that Kankkunen will foster a positive environment and facilitate teamwork during the rally.

Kalle Rovanpera is gearing up for an important rally in Kenya, seeking to enhance his performance in the WRC after a challenging start to the season. With hopes pinned on the gravel tyres and backing from his team, he aims to close the points gap to the championship leader. The presence of Juha Kankkunen as the deputy team principal adds to the team’s confidence as they prepare for the demanding Safari Rally.
