Jordan’s Clothing and Footwear Sales Face Short-Term Challenges Ahead of Eid Al Fitr

Despite a decline in purchasing power leading to low clothing and footwear sales in Jordan, traders expect a surge as Eid Al Fitr approaches, coinciding with salary payments. Preparations for holidays are completed, with expectations for increased consumer activity.

Current sales of clothing and footwear in Jordan are lagging behind previous years as purchasing power declines, even with stable prices. Traders anticipate an uptick as salaries are disbursed, leading to increased consumer activity ahead of the Eid Al Fitr holiday, which occurs in approximately two weeks. Asaad Qawasmeh, an importer and board member of the Amman Chamber of Commerce, noted a weak demand attributed to low consumer spending, despite some price reductions.

Qawasmeh also mentioned that the uniqueness of this Eid season poses challenges for apparel merchants due to seasonal overlaps, as the market is transitioning from winter to summer collections. He pointed out that the last week of Ramadan traditionally sees a spike in demand. Jordan’s imports of ready-made clothing reached JD45 million and JD14 million for footwear in the first two months of the year, primarily sourced from China, Egypt, Turkey, Europe, the U.S., and West Asia.

Munir Dayeh, an importer and wholesaler, remarked that commercial activity in clothing and footwear remains subdued compared to previous holiday seasons. However, preparations for the upcoming holidays are complete, with most merchandise already on display at competitive prices. Ihab Qadri from the Jordan Chamber of Industry confirmed that market activity is currently on par with previous seasons, indicating preparedness to meet expected demand during the holiday period.

In summary, despite current low sales in the local clothing and footwear market due to reduced purchasing power, there is optimism for improvement as salaries are paid and Eid Al Fitr approaches. Retailers are poised for the holiday with necessary stock, although the clash of seasonal clothing may complicate sales strategies.
