Tropical Cyclone Jude struck Mozambique on 10 March 2025, affecting 375,214 people and damaging over 81,000 homes. Severe flooding was reported in Nampula and Zambezia provinces, increasing existing vulnerabilities and health risks, including 56 cholera cases in Nampula. With temporary shelters housing displaced populations, response efforts are focused on immediate humanitarian needs.
Tropical Cyclone Jude made landfall in Mozambique, specifically in the Nampula province, on 10 March 2025, causing widespread devastation through heavy rainfall and strong winds. By 13 March, the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD) reported that 375,214 individuals were affected, and 81,149 houses had been damaged or destroyed. Major flooding and detrimental infrastructure damage have been noted in Nampula and Zambezia provinces, heightening the vulnerabilities of communities already facing food insecurity, displacement, and limited access to essential services.
This cyclone season has proven particularly harsh, as Nampula and Zambezia were previously impacted by Cyclones Chido in December 2024 and Dikeledi in January 2025, which affected roughly 684,000 people. As Cyclone Jude moved inland, it weakened to a severe storm impacting the provinces of Manica, Niassa, Sofala, and Tete, compounding the cumulative effects of successive cyclones and amplifying humanitarian needs.
In addition to displacement, health risks are escalating. The cholera bulletin as of 14 March 2025 reported 56 cases in the severely impacted Nampula province. Although no new cases were reported within the past 24 hours, concerns over potential outbreaks remain high due to contaminated water sources and overcrowded temporary accommodation facilities.
Initial Rapid Assessment (IRA) findings from IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) indicate over 61 temporary accommodation facilities currently housing displaced populations. These sites offer refuge for evacuees, while authorities and humanitarian organizations continue to evaluate and address urgent needs, including food assistance, safe water supply, sanitation, healthcare, and protection services.
Tropical Cyclone Jude has had a devastating impact on Mozambique, particularly in the Nampula province, affecting over 375,000 people and causing extensive damage to homes and infrastructure. The compounded effects of consecutive cyclones have exacerbated existing vulnerabilities, leading to rising health risks and increased humanitarian needs. Effective measures for shelter, food, healthcare, and sanitation are critical as authorities respond to this ongoing crisis.
