Ghanaians are encouraged by health officials to prioritize kidney health amid rising chronic kidney disease cases. Regular check-ups, avoiding harmful substances, and healthy lifestyles are essential for prevention. The 2025 World Kidney Day focuses on early detection and awareness to manage kidney health effectively.
Mr. Labram Musah, the National Coordinator of the Ghana NCD Alliance, emphasized the importance of kidney health during a media event to mark the 2025 World Kidney Day. He stated that kidneys are essential organs that need proper care to prevent diseases that impair their functionality. Musah urged Ghanaians to actively monitor their kidney status through regular checks to facilitate early detection and avoid severe kidney diseases.
World Kidney Day, taking place annually on the second Thursday of March, aims to promote awareness regarding kidney health. The 2025 theme, “Are Your Kidneys Ok? Detect Early, Protect Kidney Health,” stresses the significance of early detection and appropriate intervention for kidney-related health issues.
Kidneys filter waste and excess fluid from the blood while maintaining electrolyte balance, regulating blood pressure, and producing hormones related to red blood cell formation and vitamin D metabolism. In Ghana, chronic kidney disease prevalence is around 13.3%, primarily attributed to chronic glomerulonephritis, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension.
In addition to diabetes and hypertension, Musah highlighted alcohol consumption and smoking as significant risk factors for kidney diseases. He advised individuals to be conscious of their dietary choices and to avoid harmful substances that could affect kidney health.
Mr. Kojo Ahenkorah, President of the Renal Patients Association, warned against self-medication, asserting that purchasing medicines over-the-counter without a prescription could worsen kidney health. He advocated for maintaining a healthy lifestyle and recommended regular health screenings at least once a year for early diagnosis and treatment of potential kidney problems.
The article underlines the critical importance of kidney health in Ghana. With a significant prevalence of chronic kidney disease and various risk factors, public awareness and proactive health measures are crucial. Regular kidney check-ups, lifestyle adjustments, and government health initiatives are essential to prevent severe kidney diseases and promote overall health.
