Recently, the Independence Armwrestling Challenge took place at the Center Point Mall in Accra, organized by the Ghana Armwrestling Federation. Sports Minister Kofi Iddie Adams expressed his excitement over the intense competitions featuring top armwrestlers from Ghana, Nigeria, Benin, and Togo. The event celebrated Ghana’s independence and marked the country’s impressive achievement of winning 41 medals at the 2023 African Games.
Ghanaian competitor Grace Minta excelled in the female +80kg category, securing the gold medal by defeating athletes from Nigeria, Benin, and Togo. Her teammates, Florence Boakye and Afia Kumah, also performed admirably, winning silver and bronze medals, respectively, resulting in a complete podium sweep for Ghana in this category.
In the male competition, Ghanaian champion Wisdom Abromekeyi triumphed in the 65kg class, overcoming Daniel Acquah and Benin’s Amoono Stephen to earn gold. Additionally, newcomer Joshua Yeboah from Chicken Wing Club showcased his talent by dominating the 90kg men’s category, defeating established opponents from the region and signaling his emergence in the sport.
Dignitaries present included Sports Minister Kofi Adams, GAF officials, and representatives from Ghana’s Olympic Committee and other sporting federations. During the event, GAF President Charles Osei Asibey praised the growth of armwrestling in Ghana, emphasizing the dedication of the athletes and the success of the event, which hosted prominent competitors from neighboring countries.
The Independence Armwrestling Challenge not only celebrated Ghana’s recent independence but also showcased the nation’s strength and capability in the sport.
