On March 10, 2025, they signed an agreement to fund a 12 MW Mini Grid Project under the Desert to Power initiative, a move that signifies a step towards sustainable energy in Eritrea.
The project, valued at $19.5 million from the AfDB’s Transitional Support Facility, aims to create mini-grids producing a total of 12 MW of electricity. These grids are designated for three regions: Teseney (6 MW), Kerekebet (3 MW), and Barentu (3 MW). The initiative is projected to benefit over 235,000 residents, including 20% women and youth.
Implementation will involve collaboration between the Eritrean Ministry of Energy, Eritrea Electricity Corporation (EEC), and local enterprises, supported by a technical consulting firm. The project will serve residential properties, small farms, agro-processing zones, and water supply systems, positively impacting over 160 schools and 90 health centers in Gash Barka.
To ensure sustainable operations, training and equipment will be provided to 25 local companies, enhancing local capabilities and fostering economic growth while ensuring the project’s upkeep.
The initiative is consistent with the AfDB’s Interim Country Strategy Paper for Eritrea (2022-2024), which focuses on developing sustainable infrastructure to bolster agricultural value chains and encourage economic diversification. It aligns with Eritrea’s National Energy Policy, aiming for 20% of electric power to come from renewable sources by 2030.
