This directive was evident during the consecration of Jonathan Kabiru as the third Bishop of Nairobi at ACK St Stephen’s Cathedral, where several political figures, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, were present but not allowed to address the congregation.
Archbishop Sapit stated, “There will be no opportunities for political leaders to give speeches in church; they will wave their hands, and any addresses must occur outside the sanctuary.” Additionally, he decreed that donations would not be publicly announced, urging congregants to give as they feel led without disclosure.
Following the Archbishop’s directives, several politicians, including Gachagua and Governor Johnson Sakaja, exited the church. Sapit emphasized that this rule will also apply at future services, including one in Nyeri County on March 23, aiming to curb politicization in churches, especially amidst ongoing national challenges in healthcare, education, and taxation.
The Archbishop’s comments reflected concerns over using church platforms for political campaigning, urging politicians to focus on serving Kenyans effectively. He reinforced that the church is not a venue for political agendas, indicating that this would universally apply to all attending political leaders.
Furthermore, he emphasized the need for hiring Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners without political interference, aiming for a more focused political environment devoid of distractions like church services.
