The UAE’s UN representative, Mohamed Abushahab, urged the Security Council to recognize conflict-related sexual violence as a key factor in Sudan’s sanctions regime. He highlighted 221 verified cases of such violence, involving children under the age of one. Moreover, he emphasized the need for heightened international pressure on Sudan’s warring factions to negotiate and enable humanitarian aid access.
The ongoing conflict in Sudan, ignited by a power struggle between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) since April 2023, has escalated into a significant humanitarian crisis. It has resulted in over 12 million displaced individuals and tens of thousands of casualties.
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell reported an 80% increase in the number of women, girls, men, and boys at risk of sexual violence within the past year. Abushahab strongly condemned all forms of sexual violence, stating, “All perpetrators of conflict related sexual violence, in Sudan and around the world, must be held accountable.”
He underscored the importance of providing survivors with care, including mental health and psychosocial support, long after the conflict subsides. Additionally, Abushahab called for continued international pressure on the warring factions to initiate political negotiations to end hostilities.
Furthermore, he implored the RSF and SAF to ensure unimpeded humanitarian assistance to civilians by facilitating the flow of aid across Sudan’s borders.
