Hamas to Release Edan Alexander and Bodies of Four Dual Nationals

Hamas has agreed to release American-Israeli soldier Edan Alexander and the bodies of four dual nationals, following mediation efforts. The ceasefire has allowed humanitarian aid to enter Gaza as negotiations continue regarding the release of captives and ending the conflict.

On March 14, 2025, Hamas announced its agreement to release American-Israeli soldier Edan Alexander, who has been in captivity since October 7, along with the bodies of four other dual-nationals. This decision follows mediation efforts aimed at resuming negotiations. Hamas described their approach to this initiative as “responsible and positive.” Currently, 59 captives, including 22 living individuals, remain under Hamas’s custody. Edan Alexander is the only living American among five held captive.

The timeline for the release of the captives remains uncertain, as well as the nationalities of the four bodies to be returned. Following earlier phases of a ceasefire that began on January 19, Hamas released 38 captives in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. This ceasefire has temporarily halted hostilities that have resulted in over 48,000 casualties and significant displacement in Gaza.

During the ceasefire, substantial humanitarian aid has been directed to Gaza, addressing acute hunger among the population and transporting injured individuals to Egyptian hospitals. Furthermore, Hamas signifies its willingness to negotiate a complete release of all remaining captives in exchange for cessation of the conflict and withdrawal of Israeli forces.

In conjunction with these events, U.S. President Donald Trump’s statements have been recognized by Egypt for promoting humanitarian considerations regarding Palestinian residents remaining in Gaza. Trump’s captive envoy, Adam Boehler, indicated the potential for a deal within weeks, following the latest unprecedented dialogues between the U.S. and Hamas, suggesting a new diplomatic approach to the situation.

Hamas is set to release American-Israeli soldier Edan Alexander and the remains of four dual nationals, following negotiations facilitated by mediators. With ongoing discussions about the future of captive releases, Hamas is also advocating for a comprehensive agreement that includes ending hostilities and withdrawing Israeli troops. The situation continues to evolve as humanitarian efforts and international diplomacy play critical roles in restoring stability.
