US Reaffirms Support for Guyana Amid Tensions with Venezuela

The US supports Guyana amid Venezuelan aggression towards the Essequibo region. Ambassador Theriot confirmed this commitment, promising to “stand shoulder to shoulder” with Guyana. In light of recent tensions, Guyana has filed a request with the ICJ and is on alert for Venezuelan influences within its territory.

On Thursday, US Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole Theriot, reiterated the United States’ unwavering support for Guyana in light of a recent Venezuelan naval incursion and ongoing aggressions toward the Essequibo region. Theriot emphasized, “We support Guyana 100 percent against this aggression; it is unacceptable and we won’t allow Venezuela to threaten Guyana’s territorial integrity and sovereignty,” highlighting the commitment of multiple international partners to this cause.

Theriot further stated, “We will always stand shoulder to shoulder with Guyana in supporting you and defending you,” underscoring the significance of international solidarity in addressing these tensions. The incursion, which occurred on March 1, 2025, has prompted substantial condemnation from both regional and international allies of Guyana.

In response to rising tensions, Guyana has sought provisional measures from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), particularly following Venezuela’s plan to conduct elections on May 25. This date is notably one day before Guyana’s 59th Independence celebrations, and the elections are aimed at appointing a governor for the contested Essequibo region, a move perceived as a challenge to Guyana’s territorial claims.

Additionally, Robeson Benn, Minister of Home Affairs in Guyana, indicated that authorities are aware of potential Venezuelan sleeper agents operating within the nation. He warned that those who support Venezuela’s elections could face treason charges, indicating the seriousness of the country’s response to perceived betrayals regarding its sovereignty.

The US reaffirms its strong support for Guyana amidst tensions with Venezuela, particularly following a naval incursion and attempts to challenge Guyana’s territorial claims in the Essequibo region. The situation calls for international backing and legal actions, such as the request for provisional measures with the ICJ. Guyana’s government is also alert to internal threats posed by Venezuelan agents and has warned against support for any Venezuelan electoral actions in the region.
