The Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament has condemned the use of mass sexual violence in Sudan’s ongoing conflict, particularly affecting women and children. They call for the European Council to implement targeted measures and sanctions against those responsible for severe human rights violations. According to UNICEF, 12.1 million people are at risk of gender-based violence, with 221 reported cases of child rape over the past year, including victims as young as five.
An urgent resolution adopted by the group addresses the grave political, humanitarian, and human rights crisis in Sudan. It urges the EU and its Member States to support the International Criminal Court’s investigations into genocide and crimes against humanity in Darfur, to increase humanitarian aid, and to ensure resources for survivors of sexual violence. Humanitarian access must also be guaranteed, as two-thirds of Sudan’s population is at risk.
MEP Hilde Vautmans, coordinator in the Committee on Foreign Affairs, emphasized that “Sexual violence shatters the very foundations of a society and reduces a country—entire generations—to ruins.” She criticized Europe’s previous inaction, pressing for a clear response to the unfolding catastrophes. She urged Europe to impose sanctions on war criminals, enforce the UN arms embargo throughout Sudan, and prioritize the protection of women and children from sexual violence.
