Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna was denied entry into Angola, despite an invitation from UNITA. The barring of Sifuna and Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine creates diplomatic concerns due to their opposition status. The incident also coincides with Sifuna facing political challenges within his party, ODM.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has faced entry denial into Angola, despite an invitation from the main opposition party, UNITA. On March 13, Sifuna reported that Angolan authorities prohibited his entry upon arrival, although UNITA leaders had assured them of their welcome. This situation is reminiscent of Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine’s denied entry into Angola as well.
Sifuna highlighted in a statement on X, formerly Twitter, that the President of UNITA, Adalberto Costa, invited them. He also shared an official communication from UNITA confirming this invitation. The document indicated that border visas were formally requested for Sifuna and Bobi Wine, who were expected at Fevereiro International Airport in Luanda.
Despite the invitation and documented assurance from UNITA regarding Sifuna and Wine’s stay, Angolan authorities did not clarify the reasons for their denied access, prompting questions about the political dynamics at play, particularly since both leaders are known opposition figures in their countries.
The event underscores ongoing diplomatic and political challenges, given the historical tensions between Angola’s ruling MPLA and the opposition UNITA, although recent years have seen some easing of hostilities. The MPLA’s narrow election victory over UNITA has positioned UNITA as the legitimate opposition party.
In addition to this incident, Sifuna faces internal disputes within his own party, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). Allegations of disloyalty have emerged, as ODM Chairman George Aladwa suggested Sifuna’s potential alignment with ousted former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua could threaten his standing in the party. Despite this, Sifuna demonstrated loyalty by co-presenting a memorandum with Raila Odinga on March 7, emphasizing his connection to the party leader.
Senator Edwin Sifuna’s entry denial into Angola highlights significant diplomatic tensions surrounding opposition figures and raises concerns regarding political relations. Despite an official invitation from UNITA, Angolan authorities barred entry without explanation, reflecting the historical conflict between the MPLA and UNITA. Additionally, Sifuna’s internal party challenges within ODM may impact his political trajectory moving forward.
