Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed unwavering support for Mauritius’ sovereignty over the Chagos Islands during a recent press briefing with Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam. This endorsement aligns with Mauritius’ efforts to negotiate a new deal regarding the Chagos Archipelago, which contains a significant military base utilized by both the US and UK.
Modi stated, “In the context of Chagos, we fully respect the sovereignty of Mauritius,” emphasizing the importance of a secure and open Indian Ocean amidst growing Chinese influence. The collaboration between India and Mauritius will be strengthened through cooperative organizations like the Colombo Security Conclave and the Indian Ocean Rim Association.
Following a two-day state visit, PM Modi returned to Delhi, where he reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting Mauritius’ development. Serving as the chief guest at Mauritius’s National Day festivities on March 12, 2025, marked his second participation in this honorary capacity, having previously attended in 2015.
In recognition of his contributions, Modi received the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean, making him the first Indian to achieve this honor. Previously, the former US President Trump voiced support for an agreement between Mauritius and Britain regarding the US-British military presence in the Chagos Archipelago, which has been operational since the 1970s.
