Pirelli debuts as the official tyre supplier for Moto2 and Moto3 at the Grand Prix of Argentina, held at the Autódromo de Termas de Río Hondo. With no prior data, they provide standard compounds for riders. The circuit’s aggressive tarmac and variable temperatures present challenges, but Pirelli is confident based on past performance.
The Grand Prix of Argentina is expected to be an exciting event as Pirelli debuts as the official tyre supplier for Moto2 and Moto3 in 2024. This will be the ninth time the Autódromo de Termas de Río Hondo has hosted the event, returning to the MotoGP calendar after a hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic and the previous year.
Pirelli will introduce a basic allocation of standard tyre compounds for both Moto2 and Moto3, relying on data from previous circuits and feedback from teams. Each rider is allotted eight tyres per slick compound, enabling them to choose their preferred options for both front and rear throughout the race weekend.
The Termas de Río Hondo circuit is notorious for its aggressive tarmac, which poses significant challenges, such as rough surfaces and low grip levels. Additionally, high air and asphalt temperatures during this season can heighten these difficulties.
Giorgio Barbier, Pirelli’s Motorsport Director, acknowledged the challenges of racing at an untested venue, stating that “Pirelli has never raced at Termas de Río Hondo… so it is an absolute debut for us.” He highlighted the care in tyre allocation based on previous experiences and conditions similar to those expected at the circuit.
Barbier also noted the circuit’s demanding nature, while reflecting on past successes with tyres at notably challenging tracks. He pointed out potential unknowns regarding the current condition of the track, saying, “we don’t know… what temperatures we could find… they could make the track even more slippery.”
The 4.8 km Termas de Río Hondo circuit, located in Santiago del Estero, features 14 corners and is known for high-speed sections combined with its abrasive surface. Pirelli’s strategy of employing standard compounds indicates their confidence in the performance and adaptability of their tyres, given their successful history over various circuits last season.
Pirelli’s introduction at the Grand Prix of Argentina for Moto2 and Moto3 showcases their commitment to innovation in motorsport. By deploying standard tyre compounds based on rigorous data and understanding of track conditions, Pirelli aims to deliver effective performance in one of the most challenging venues. This debut will be closely monitored as teams adapt to the demands of the Termas de Río Hondo circuit.
