Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo announces no plans for a meeting between President Ali and Maduro amid rising tensions due to Venezuela’s naval incursion and upcoming elections in the contested Essequibo region, threatening Guyana’s national security. Guyana has sought measures from the International Court of Justice and is engaging with US officials for support.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro recently proposed a meeting with Guyana’s President, Dr. Irfaan Ali. However, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo informed reporters that there are no plans to accept this request at present. Jagdeo stated that the discussion’s relevance to national security and interests would be evaluated before any decision is made by the president.
This proposal follows a Venezuelan naval incursion, prompting Guyana to formally protest as these actions threaten regional stability. The incident, which occurred on March 1, 2025, led to strong condemnation from Guyana’s international partners. In light of these tensions, Guyana has sought provisional measures from the International Court of Justice regarding the situation.
Additionally, the Venezuelan elections scheduled for May 25, occurring right before Guyana’s 59th Independence Day, are seen as provocative. These elections aim to operate within the contested Essequibo region, asserting Venezuela’s claim against Guyana’s territorial rights.
Dr. Jagdeo also indicated that President Ali is currently in the United States where he is meeting with high-ranking American officials. US Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot expressed the US’s robust support for Guyana following the recent geopolitical tensions.
The absence of current plans for a meeting between Maduro and Ali is a significant reflection of the tense relations between Venezuela and Guyana. With recent military incursions and provocative elections, Guyana’s government is prioritizing national security and international support. The situation remains delicate as both nations navigate their territorial disputes and diplomatic strategies.
