Japan and Liberia have signed an exchange of notes to extend the Japan Freeway, enhancing connectivity between the Freeport of Monrovia and the Gabriel Tucker Bridge. The signing, hailed as a major milestone in diplomatic relations, aims to bolster infrastructure and support Liberia’s economic development initiatives, as emphasized by Deputy Minister Nyei and Ambassador Yoshimoto.
The Governments of Japan and Liberia have recently signed an exchange of notes to extend the Japan Freeway-Road corridor from Monrovia’s Freeport to the Gabriel Tucker Bridge. This significant event took place on March 12, 2025, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Liberia. The extension is expected to enhance infrastructure and connectivity, contributing to economic development in the region.
Dr. Ibrahim Al-bakri Nyei, Liberia’s Deputy Minister for International Cooperation and Economic Integration, lauded the event as a crucial step in strengthening economic and cultural ties between Japan and Liberia. He acknowledged that this growing relationship signifies ongoing support from Japan, which has significantly aided Liberia’s recovery and development since the end of the civil war.
Deputy Minister Nyei pointed out Japan’s KR Food Assistance, which has been instrumental in financing various social and economic programs in Liberia over the past decade. He also highlighted the Japan Freeway’s positive impact on goods and people movement, which has promoted urban development and economic stability.
The extension of the freeway involves an additional 1.9 kilometers of road construction, enhancing the connection between central Monrovia and Bushrod Island. This initiative aligns with Liberia’s national development plan, the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development focusing on critical sectors such as roads, agriculture, education, and tourism.
Nyei noted that achieving the ARREST Agenda’s goals relies heavily on stimulating the private sector and creating employment opportunities. The Deputy Minister also expressed Liberia’s intentions to accelerate trade relations and investments with Japan, ensuring mutual benefits in strategic areas.
He concluded by reaffirming Liberia’s commitment to deepening its partnership with Japan and expressing gratitude for Japan’s support in Liberia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the upcoming term.
Japan’s Ambassador to Liberia, Mr. Yoshimoto Hiroshi, acknowledged Japan’s long-standing association with the Japan Freeway, citing past contributions to its reconstruction. He emphasized that the extension project will significantly ease traffic congestion and improve commuter connectivity.
Ambassador Yoshimoto articulated Japan’s dedication to advancing sustainable infrastructure in Africa, which is foundational for stimulating economic growth and strengthening community resilience. He also thanked all parties involved in making the project possible, demonstrating Japan’s commitment to collaborative development efforts with Liberia.
The recent signing of notes between Japan and Liberia marks a pivotal development in enhancing infrastructure connectivity through the extension of the Japan Freeway. This partnership not only strengthens bilateral relations but also aims to support Liberia’s economic objectives through improved transportation. The inclusion of the Japanese assistance in Liberia’s broader development agenda signifies a robust approach towards sustainable growth and international cooperation in infrastructure projects.
