Increasing Violence and Civilian Casualties in North Darfur Conflict

In North Darfur, artillery shelling by the RSF killed 10 civilians, including five children, according to the SAF. The SAF claims to have shot down numerous drones and continued military operations against the RSF. Reports of RSF attacks on villages raise concerns about civilian safety and property destruction, while ongoing tensions persist in the region.

The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) reported that recent artillery shelling in El Fasher, North Darfur, attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), resulted in the deaths of 10 civilians, including five children under six. The bombardment also left four women seriously injured, who were subsequently transferred to local health centers amidst rising anxiety among residents.

On Monday, the SAF’s 6th Infantry Division shot down seven drones in El Fasher, amidst a heavy drone and artillery assault involving 40 drones and 50 artillery shells directed at the city. This follows the SAF’s previous claim of intercepting more than 100 drones over a span of 10 days, highlighting concerns over the proliferation and regulation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The SAF’s report on Tuesday indicated that the RSF had shelled El Fasher with 37 artillery rounds, leading to civilian casualties and injuries. The SAF countered these actions by targeting RSF positions, destroying combat vehicles and a Land Cruiser outfitted with weaponry, as part of their ongoing military operations.

Additionally, the SAF successfully destroyed a supply convoy of the RSF using artillery, causing significant damage and reported fatalities among the RSF troops. Separately, the Special Action Forces and Joint Reserve executed operations to secure areas, confiscating combat vehicles and stopping attempts to ambush government forces.

Recent reports have emerged from the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) accusing the RSF of attacking various villages in the Tawila locality, resulting in multiple civilian casualties and widespread property destruction. While these claims are challenging to confirm, inquiries have been made to both the SAF and RSF for further clarification.

This article details the escalating violence in North Darfur, where artillery shelling by the RSF has resulted in civilian casualties, including children. The SAF has reported recent advancements in warfare, including drone intercepts and attacks on RSF positions, while allegations of RSF assaults on villages complicate the conflict landscape. Continuous military operations by both sides highlight the ongoing instability and calls for effective intervention.
