Houthis Release Officials Linked to Rada’a Civilian Bombings, Sparking Outrage

The Iran-backed Houthis released three senior security officials implicated in a bombing that killed 16 civilians in Rada’a. The decision has triggered widespread outrage among victims’ families. Human rights violations by the Houthis continue to be documented, underscoring systematic violence against civilians in Yemen.

The Iran-backed Houthis have recently released three senior security officials implicated in the bombing of civilian homes in Rada’a, Al-Bayda governorate, during Ramadan last year. This attack resulted in the tragic deaths of 16 civilians, including women and children, causing significant outrage among victims’ families and local residents.

The individuals released are Mohammed Saleh Al-Awkabi, previously the commander of central security and investigation director in Rada’a; Abu Saleh Saran, the former security director for Rada’a districts; and Mujali Al-Jawfi, the former security director of Wadi Rabea district.

The release was ordered by Houthi leader Abdulmalik Al-Houthi despite their alleged roles in human rights violations. Local sources indicate this decision was perceived as a deliberate provocation, especially after the images surfaced of the released officials being hosted by a key suspect in the bombing, Abu Hussein Al-Arabji, the former police chief of Al-Bayda.

Victims’ families were led to believe that the perpetrators would be arrested and brought to justice. However, the Houthis released the accused without any legal proceedings, further exacerbating the community’s frustration. The bombing was reportedly a consequence of a dispute involving the Al-Zailai family and Houthi militias, which led to civilian casualties and widespread condemnation.

The Houthis, since taking control of Sanaa, have faced allegations of systematically targeting opponents and committing extensive human rights abuses, including the destruction of nearly 900 homes across 16 governorates, illustrating a troubling pattern of violence against civilians.

The release of the three Houthi leaders linked to the civilian bombings has sparked outrage in Rada’a and raised serious concerns about accountability for human rights violations. The community’s frustration is compounded by the Houthis’ broken promises to pursue justice for victims, highlighting a pattern of systematic violence against civilians in Yemen. The situation calls for increased scrutiny and investigation into these human rights abuses.
