Significant participation from Syrian authorities and representatives highlights the EU’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and peaceful future for Syria.
On March 17, the European Union will host its 9th international conference to support Syria in Brussels. This event occurs during a pivotal moment for Syria following significant political changes. The gathering provides an opportunity for the Syrian populace to regain control and commence rebuilding efforts.
The conference, co-chaired by High Representative/Vice-President Kaja Kallas, Commissioner Dubravka Šuica, and Commissioner Hadja Lahbib, will focus on establishing international support for a Syrian-led transition. This transition will prioritize socio-economic recovery and assistance. Notably, Syrian interim authorities are invited for the first time, along with representatives from the United Nations and neighboring countries.
The situation in Syria remains precarious, evidenced by ongoing violence affecting civilians and security personnel. The conference will discuss the latest developments, initial transition steps, and how the international community can offer support. It will emphasize the socio-economic needs of Syrian citizens while continuing to address humanitarian crises affecting the region.
Additionally, the EU plans to facilitate a meeting for Syrian civil society representatives from inside Syria and the diaspora in Damascus. More information on this initiative will be disclosed later.
Commissioner Hadja Lahbib emphasized the EU’s commitment: “The EU stands with the Syrian people on their path to recovery, peace, and a secure future. The dire humanitarian crisis in Syria and the region has not vanished with the fall of the regime. Today we have a historic chance to reset, recover and rebuild. I witnessed first-hand the huge potential these developments bring for Syria and the entire region. The EU will continue its strong support for an inclusive Syrian transition.”
The EU’s commitment to the Syrian people is longstanding, with the organization of annual conferences over the last eight years. Since 2011, the EU and its Member States have mobilized over €37 billion in humanitarian, development, and stabilization aid, supporting Syrians internally and in surrounding areas.
The upcoming EU conference represents a crucial opportunity for the Syrian people to steer their future towards recovery and stability. With a focus on socio-economic recovery and inclusive transition efforts, the EU aims to bolster support and address the ongoing humanitarian needs in Syria. Continued collaboration with international entities and local representatives will be essential in this process. The EU’s long-standing financial commitment underscores its dedication to supporting the Syrian populace during this transformative period.
