Democratic Party of Kenya Withdraws from Kenya Kwanza Coalition

The Democratic Party of Kenya has announced its withdrawal from the Kenya Kwanza coalition, stating the decision comes due to unfavorable political developments. The notice details a 30-day exit period, effective from March 7, 2023. This move is linked to the increasingly strained relationship between Public Service CS Justin Muturi and President Ruto, as acknowledged by political leaders.

The Democratic Party of Kenya (DP) has officially announced its withdrawal from the Kenya Kwanza coalition led by President William Ruto, stating that their continued association is no longer viable. In a letter sent to the coalition secretariat and the Registrar of Political Parties, they indicated that this decision was due to ongoing political developments.

The letter, co-signed by DP Secretary General Dr. Jacob Haji and party Chairman Esau Kioni, confirms a 30-day notice to exit as specified in Clause 8 of the Coalition Agreement. The notice takes effect from March 7, 2023.

DP was instrumental in bringing Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi into the Kenya Kwanza Coalition, which preceded his Ministerial appointment. His strained relationship with President Ruto has contributed to speculation regarding his potential departure from the Cabinet, as highlighted by National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah in a recent interview.

National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah emphasized that Muturi was aware of the possibility of exiting the Cabinet due to the rocky dynamics with President Ruto. Ichung’wah’s insights position this withdrawal as a significant political maneuver within the current political landscape in Kenya.

The Democratic Party of Kenya’s departure from the Kenya Kwanza coalition marks a notable shift in Kenya’s political dynamics. With a formal letter indicating their withdrawal, the implications for affected parties, particularly regarding Justin Muturi’s position, are significant. This exit reflects ongoing tensions within the coalition and raises questions about future alliances and political strategies in the region.
