The Democratic Party of Kenya (DPK), under the leadership of Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, has officially announced its plan to exit the Kenya Kwanza coalition by issuing a 30-day notice. This decision was driven by recent political developments that DPK considers make continued membership in the coalition untenable. A formal letter, dated March 7, 2025, was sent to the Kenya Kwanza Coalition Secretariat to communicate this decision.
In the exit notice, the DPK invoked Clause 8 of the coalition agreement, which details the process for termination, effective within 30 days from the notice date. The letter was also forwarded to relevant political figures and entities including the Registrar of Political Parties and the secretaries of allied parties such as Ford Kenya and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Muturi’s decision to withdraw from the coalition has been fueled by his growing criticism of the government, especially in light of personal circumstances involving the abduction of his son, Leslie Muturi, in June 2024. The distressing event has prompted him to speak out against enforced disappearances in the country. “I have personally suffered… leaving my family in turmoil,” he stated regarding his son’s ordeal.
Despite Muturi’s position within the government, he faces criticism from allies of President William Ruto, who accuse him of politicizing personal tragedy for political gain. Senator Wahome Wamatinga asserted that Muturi’s actions are linked to his ambitions for the 2027 elections, while other political figures have questioned the appropriateness of his public criticisms.
In response to the backlash, Muturi expressed his determination to remain steadfast, stating, “I do not fear being sacked. I trust in God,” after circulating reports of a resignation letter. He has indicated a willingness to face the consequences of his actions and critiques of the government’s handling of significant issues.
