CYCLES-LIBERIA Advocates for Climate Action to Support Farmers and Youth Engagement

CYCLES-LIBERIA urges urgent action to address climate change effects on smallholder farmers. The organization highlights farmers’ struggles with inconsistent weather patterns impacting food security. The Youth Post-COP29 Conference emphasizes the need for greater youth involvement in climate policy, stronger government actions, and innovative financing for climate initiatives, supporting Liberia’s commitment to global climate goals.

CYCLES-LIBERIA, a prominent advocacy organization in Liberia, urges prompt action on climate change due to its adverse effects on smallholder farmers. These farmers are increasingly unable to rely on traditional weather patterns, experiencing unexpected droughts and rains that significantly disrupt food production and jeopardize food security in the region. “Farmers can no longer rely on traditional weather patterns,” stated Beyan E. Harris, Executive Director of CYCLES-LIBERIA.

Mr. Harris further illustrated the realities faced by farmers, emphasizing the difficulties in predicting seasonal weather due to climate change. The Youth Post-COP29 Conference highlighted critical environmental issues, particularly waste management. He commented, “Many people think waste disposal is just about throwing trash on the ground,” indicating the long-term hazards of poor waste management practices.

He emphasized the need for both mitigation and adaptation strategies, advocating for increased youth involvement in climate policy and urging the Liberian government to act decisively on climate matters. “Attending global climate conferences like COP is a privilege, not a right,” he noted while stressing the need for actionable solutions in Liberia.

During the conference, the Program Coordinator for UNDP, Abraham E. Tumbay, discussed the significance of Liberia’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) 3.0 and the necessity for collective global climate action. Tumbay stated, “Every commitment made so far is crucial, but we must go beyond pledges,” highlighting the urgent need for increased efforts towards climate stability.

With a focus on financing climate initiatives, he noted that transitioning to renewable energy sources is vital for economic and environmental sustainability. Tumbay mentioned the importance of solar farms and clean energy investments to reduce emissions.

Both speakers called for a stronger governmental response and continuous youth participation in environmental policy discussions. The need for collaborative efforts towards sustainability was emphasized, particularly in light of the challenges faced by Liberia.

Gathering over 50 participants, the Youth Post COP29 Dialogue brought together students, civil society, and marginalized groups, including individuals with disabilities, to discuss Liberia’s approach to COP29 outcomes. The event allowed attendees to share insights from the conference and emphasized the role of young people in translating global commitments into local actions.

Despite challenges, participants sought to bridge the gap between the commitments made at the global level by the Global North and local execution. The dialogue highlighted the collaborative efforts among various grassroots environmental organizations striving for climate action in Liberia.

In conclusion, CYCLES-LIBERIA highlights the critical need for comprehensive action on climate change to support smallholder farmers affected by unpredictable weather patterns. The emphasis on youth participation in policy, along with a collaborative approach to financing climate initiatives, is essential. As Liberia navigates climate challenges, engagement from all sectors will be vital for sustainable development and environmental resilience.
