Yin Juan, a distinguished scientist from the University of Science and Technology of China and a member of the National People’s Congress, announced this development during the NPC’s recent plenary meeting. The secure link, which spans 12,800 kilometers (7,954 miles) from Beijing to South Africa, utilizes China’s sophisticated quantum communication satellites, showcasing a critical step in the global push for enhanced security in telecommunications.
This project signifies the first instance of implementing a secure quantum key distribution experiment in the southern hemisphere. Yin, who was instrumental in the development of the world’s inaugural quantum communication satellite, Mozi (or Micius), further illustrated China’s commitment to pioneering long-distance quantum communication technologies. In a noteworthy earlier achievement in 2017, the Mozi satellite facilitated a secure quantum call between China and Austria across a distance of 7,600 kilometers, underscoring the progress made in this vital field.
