Eight associates of Riek Machar were released from detention, while Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chol remains jailed. Calls for the release of all detainees persist amid escalating tensions between political factions in South Sudan, emphasizing the need for upholding human rights and the rule of law during ongoing political strife.
The recent report confirmed the release of eight individuals linked to First Vice-President Riek Machar, following their detention by the National Security Service. Puok Both Baluang, the Press Secretary, announced that this group includes both relatives of Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chol as well as others from the detained 21. Among those released were Nelson Malou Lueng Makeny, Kun Tut Gatluak, and others.
Despite this development, Minister Puot Kang Chol and Gen. Duop Lam, Chief of General Staff for SPLA-IO, remain incarcerated. Baluang reiterated calls from the SPLM-IO for the release of these individuals and reiterate demands for the freedom of all detainees associated with their movement.
Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization, welcomed the release but urged further action for the rest. Yakani underlined the need to uphold the rule of law and respect human rights, especially given the political tensions due to the 2018 peace agreement.
He cautioned political leaders against settling differences through violence and suggested that recent conflicts highlight a lack of political maturity. Yakani warned that neglecting responsibilities related to the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan could jeopardize its effectiveness, urging the Presidency to take proactive steps against political misunderstandings.
The backdrop of these events includes rising tensions between President Salva Kiir’s forces and those loyal to Machar, especially following violent clashes in Upper Nile State. This unrest has prompted more aggressive actions from Kiir’s administration towards Machar’s supporters, persisting with the detention of the Petroleum Minister and military officials aligned with Machar.
The release of eight individuals linked to Riek Machar amid ongoing tensions highlights significant political instability in South Sudan. Applauded by civil society, calls for the release of the remaining detainees reflect broader concerns about human rights and adherence to peace agreements. As violence escalates between opposing factions, the urgent need for proactive measures and responsible political leadership becomes critical to ensuring stability and the continued viability of peace accords.
