The State of Qatar has emphasized the necessity of adhering to international drug control commitments to effectively combat global drug challenges. This was addressed by His Excellency Mr. Jassim Yaqoub Al-Hammadi, Qatar’s Ambassador to the UN, during the 68th session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna. He underscored the inadequacy of current international efforts against illicit drug production and trafficking.
The 2024 World Drug Report from the UNODC revealed concerning trends, including record cocaine production and a rise in drug use, particularly among younger populations. Additionally, more jurisdictions are permitting recreational cannabis use, illustrating a significant hurdle in achieving a drug-free world. Despite these issues, some progress was noted, such as the decline in opium production in Afghanistan.
Al-Hammadi called for international collaboration to support Afghanistan and Syria, especially through alternative development programs for Afghan farmers. Qatar supports findings from the 2024 World Drug Report, emphasizing that dismantling drug economies requires addressing systemic issues like poverty and development gaps.
Qatar reaffirmed the critical role of the CND as the UN’s primary body for drug policymaking and emphasized the UNODC’s leadership in tackling the global drug crisis.
