The sixth edition of the Nedbank for Good Series commenced on March 8 and 9, featuring the concurrent Nedbank Ladies Central Open at Omeya Golf Club. This event was met with strong participation, gathering 106 participants across both competitions, including 26 senior ladies and six junior golfers.
Tashia Kalondo, the newly elected Secretary of the Namibia Amateur Ladies Golf Union (NALGU), highlighted the strategic benefit of merging the tournaments, allowing female golfers to showcase their talents in a competitive environment. She mentioned NALGU’s initiatives, such as workshops and training programs aimed at attracting youth to the sport, noting that the average age of female golfers in Namibia sits at 40, which is concerning for international competition.
Dan Zwiebel from DZ Golf, who organizes the Nedbank for Good Series, applauded the collaboration with another golfing event and suggested the possibility of further integrating NALGU into future editions of the series.
In the men’s competition, Douglas Holtzhausen emerged victorious with 39 points, followed closely by Dieter Schrywer at 38 points, while Braam Vermeulen also posted 38 points but placed third. For the women, Wilna Bredenhann claimed the top spot with an impressive 43 points, followed by Kalondo with 42 points, and Mariena Ludwig with 38 points.
Bredenhann was recognized as the overall champion for both competitions with a gross score of 169, achieving a notable performance, while Doulaine Holtzhausen and Brenda Lens followed closely with scores of 173 and 147, respectively. The tournament also celebrated other category winners, including Mary-Ann Boltmann for best gross in the A Division and Celonika Robinson winning in the B Division.
Biniam Ghirmatsion, Nedbank Namibia’s Executive for Wealth Management and Bancassurance, expressed pride in the tournament’s outcomes and emphasized the bank’s dedication to promoting women’s sports. He encouraged corporate sponsorships for women’s golf development and acknowledged the efforts of the tournament organizers and co-sponsors in ensuring the success of the event.
This year’s Nedbank for Good Series profits will directly benefit Agra ProVision, which aims to train and support underserved agricultural communities in Namibia.
The Nedbank for Good Series successfully launched its sixth edition with record participation in golf tournaments designed to promote women’s sports. Key figures from both NALGU and Nedbank highlighted their commitment to developing golfing talent, especially among youth. The event not only celebrated individual achievements but also focused on supporting agricultural communities through its proceeds, underlining the series’ broader social impact.
