Recent clashes in South Sudan have led the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to issue a warning about the potential for renewed war, threatening the fragile peace established post-civil war in 2018. The ongoing violence between President Salva Kiir’s and Vice President Riek Machar’s forces raises concerns for regional stability and peace.
Tensions escalated noticeably following the attack on a UN helicopter while it sought to evacuate soldiers from northeastern South Sudan, resulting in fatalities, including a UN crew member and a South Sudanese general. Despite assurances from President Kiir regarding peace, the IGAD pointed to the March 4 attack in Nasir by approximately 6,000 armed members of the White Army, a militia loyal to Machar, marking a significant uptick in conflict. Uganda has also sent special forces to Juba, which South Sudanese officials have denied, suggesting heightened tensions in the capital.
