Robeson Benn, Minister of Home Affairs in Guyana, issued a warning against individuals who might accept appointments from Venezuela to govern the Essequibo region. He stated that anyone who supports these appointments will face treason charges, indicating the government’s serious stance on national sovereignty. Benn remarked on the presence of “sleepers,” or secret agents from Venezuela, already within Guyana.
During a police conference, Benn specifically mentioned that if a Guyanese is appointed as Governor of Essequibo after Venezuela’s upcoming elections, they will be charged with treason. He emphasized, “We will charge that person for treason and lock them up; each and everyone of them.” Furthermore, he noted that individuals supporting these appointments will also face legal repercussions.
In response to Venezuela’s planned elections on May 25, which coincides with Guyana’s 59th independence celebrations, the Guyanese government has taken action. It has formally requested provisional measures from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), reiterating its commitment to defending its territorial integrity.
