The Ghanaian government has allocated a total of GH¢492.5 million to support victims of recent disasters affecting the coastal and riverine communities. Specifically, GH¢200 million is earmarked for those impacted by tidal waves in Agavedzi and adjacent areas in the Ketu South Constituency. Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced these funds during the presentation of the 2025 Budget to Parliament in Accra.
Additionally, GH¢292.5 million has been dedicated to assist those affected by the Akosombo dam spillage. Reports indicate that the tidal wave disaster has displaced over 300 people, with the destruction of 50 homes and damage spanning 80 kilometers of the coastline. This disaster has prompted President John Mahama to commit to a sea defense project to safeguard vulnerable coastlines.
The UNICEF report highlights that the Akosombo Dam spillage has displaced approximately 35,857 individuals, including many children. In an effort to manage water levels, the Volta River Authority released water from the Akosombo Dam in 2023 to mitigate overflowing and prevent flooding in nearby communities. Notably, the North and Central Tongu districts faced the most significant challenges due to elevated water levels in the Volta River and resulting floods.
