The Democratic Party of Kenya (DPK), led by Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, has announced it will exit the Kenya Kwanza coalition, issuing a 30-day notice due to recent political developments that have made continued participation untenable. The decision was formally communicated in a letter dated March 7, 2025, addressed to the Kenya Kwanza Coalition Secretariat, signed by DPK Chairman Esau Kioni and Secretary General Jacob Haji.
The letter states, “Kindly take notice that our stay in Kenya Kwanza Coalition is no longer tenable due to the prevailing political developments.” This communication includes a reference to Clause 8 of their coalition agreement, which outlines the procedures for withdrawal, set to take effect within 30 days.
Muturi’s decision to withdraw from Kenya Kwanza coincides with his increasing criticism of the government, particularly concerning the enforced disappearance of his son, Leslie Muturi, who was abducted in June 2024. Muturi has voiced his anguish, stating, “I have personally suffered as my son was abducted, leaving my family in turmoil.”
The abduction and subsequent lack of communication regarding his son’s well-being have fueled Muturi’s criticisms. He stated, “I’ve not gotten any answers as to why my son was abducted, held incommunicado, and nobody gave any reasons for that abduction.”
In response to Muturi’s stance, some allies of President William Ruto have accused him of politicizing the issue. Senator Wahome Wamatinga suggested that Muturi’s outbursts are politically motivated as he prepares for the 2027 elections, stating, “Muturi is just a bitter man against Ruto, who is expanding the broad-based government to those in opposition.”
Comments from Reuben Kiborek, a UDA MP, labeled Muturi’s criticisms as inappropriate for public discussion, advocating for such issues to be resolved within cabinet meetings. Additionally, Saboti MP Caleb Amisi criticized Muturi’s ability to critique a government he serves, suggesting he consider resigning instead.
Despite the backlash, Muturi stands firm in his beliefs and has indicated he is unafraid of potential repercussions, asserting, “I do not fear being sacked. I trust in God,” reflecting his determination amidst the criticism.
