DPK Chairman Esau Kioni and Secretary General Jacob Haji communicated this decision in a letter dated March 7, 2025, to the Kenya Kwanza Coalition Secretariat.
The letter cites the invocation of the Termination Clause (8) of the coalition agreement, making the exit effective within 30 days. It was also shared with the Registrar of Political Parties and other coalition members, namely Ford Kenya, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), and Maendeleo Chap Chap Party.
Muturi’s withdrawal coincides with his heightened criticisms of the government, particularly concerning enforced disappearances. He shared that his own son, Leslie, was abducted in June 2024, profoundly impacting his family. Despite being a former member of the National Security Council, he expressed frustration over the lack of information regarding his son’s kidnapping.
While the Directorate of Criminal Investigations is purportedly looking into the case, criticism from President William Ruto’s allies has ensued. Some claim Muturi’s actions are politically motivated as he seems to be positioning himself for the 2027 elections. Comments from various political figures suggest that Muturi’s criticisms of the government are inappropriate given his current role.
Despite the backlash, Muturi remains resolute, asserting that he is unafraid of potential repercussions. He stated, “I do not fear being sacked. I trust in God.” There are indications that he may have already submitted his resignation letter amidst ongoing political turmoil.
