Timor-Leste Establishes Parliamentary Commission to Support Western Sahara

Timor-Leste’s National Parliament has approved a resolution to establish a Parliamentary Commission to support the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination regarding Western Sahara. The commission includes representatives from all political parties in the parliament, reflecting comprehensive political unity. The initiative indicates ongoing solidarity with the Saharawi cause, endorsed by the SADR Ambassador.

On March 10, 2025, Timor-Leste’s National Parliament demonstrated its solidarity with the Saharawi people by approving a resolution to establish a Parliamentary Commission focused on the Western Sahara issue. This decision encourages communal support for the Saharawi people’s struggle for self-determination and independence.

The newly formed Parliamentary Commission includes representatives from all political factions within the Timorese Parliament: three members from the National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction Party (CNRT), two from the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (FRETILIN), one from the Democratic Party (PD), one from the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), and one from the KUNTO Party.

Mr. Malainin Abba, the Saharawi Republic (SADR) Ambassador to Timor-Leste, emphasized the significance of this resolution, stating it reflects a strong commitment from both the Parliament and the Timorese people towards supporting the Saharawi people’s rights, especially their pursuit of self-determination and sovereignty.

It’s important to note that a previous commission, also composed of parliament members, engaged in the 46th European Conference of Support and Solidarity with Saharawi People (EUCOCO) held in Berlin, Germany, in December 2022, showcasing ongoing international advocacy for the Saharawi cause.

Timor-Leste’s National Parliament has taken a decisive step in supporting the Saharawi people’s quest for self-determination by forming a dedicated Parliamentary Commission. This new body includes representatives from multiple political parties, ensuring broad political support. Through this initiative, Timor-Leste reinforces its commitment to international solidarity efforts aimed at securing independence for the Saharawi Republic.
