South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has dismissed three ministers, which marks a significant cabinet reshuffle amid ongoing political instability. In his recent decree announced through the South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation, Kiir removed Ruben Madol Arol as the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, appointing Wek Mamer Kuol as his successor. Awut Deng Acuil was replaced as Minister of General Education and Instruction by Kuyok Abol Kuyok, while Joseph Mum Majak’s dismissal from the role of Trade and Industry Minister was also confirmed.
Both Deng and Madol, who had held their positions since 2020, were removed without explanation, as was Majak, who had only been in office since July 2024. This reshuffle comes in the aftermath of violent confrontations in Nasir, which included an attack on a UN aircraft, resulting in casualties among UN personnel and local soldiers on March 7.
The international community continues to pressure conflicting parties in South Sudan to foster a transition towards stability, democracy, and lasting peace. They have called for measures to prevent a regression into chaos that could affect the nation.
Tensions in Nasir, a strategically significant town, have intensified since March 3, leading to arrests of senior officials from the SPLM/A-IO, which is headed by First Vice-President Riek Machar. Reports indicate that over 20 individuals have died and many more were injured near the South Sudan-Ethiopia border.
