On March 11, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden in Mauritius to honor former Prime Minister Seewoosagur Ramgoolam and former President Anerood Jugnauth. Accompanying him was the current Prime Minister of Mauritius, Navin Ramgoolam, who participated in the significant event by planting a Bael sapling, in line with the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative aimed at environmental conservation.
During the visit, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized the occasion through a post on X, highlighting the leaders’ contributions to Mauritius and their shared commitment towards a greener future. PM Modi also echoed this sentiment, expressing his admiration for the two historical figures, stating their impact on the progress of Mauritius was profound.
Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude for being part of the tree-planting initiative, mentioning, “Humbled by the heartfelt gesture of my friend, Prime Minister Dr. Navin Ramgoolam, in taking part in ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’—a tribute to nature, motherhood, and sustainability.” The botanical garden serves as a focal point for preserving biodiversity in Mauritius.
Following the tribute, PM Modi was scheduled to meet with the President of Mauritius, Dharam Gokhool, who would host a state lunch in his honor. In the evening, he planned to address the Indian diaspora in Mauritius alongside Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam. Notably, Modi’s visit coincides with Mauritius’ National Day, on which he will act as the chief guest for the Independence Day celebrations.
