Petrobras Explores Opportunities in Argentina, Advances Projects in Colombia and Africa

Petrobras is exploring opportunities in Argentina for gas and oil, while advancing projects in Colombia and Africa. Key developments include utilizing a pipeline for Vaca Muerta gas, drafting a gas project plan in Colombia, and initiating drilling in Sao Tome and Principe and South Africa.

Petrobras, the Brazilian state-owned oil company, is exploring potential opportunities in Argentina while making advancements in projects located in Colombia and Africa, according to Sylvia dos Anjos, head of exploration and production. At the CERAWeek conference in Houston, Anjos noted that natural gas from Argentina’s Vaca Muerta region could be beneficial, as a pipeline linking Argentina, Bolivia, and Brazil may facilitate its transport.

Additionally, Petrobras is seeking oil opportunities in Argentina to help replenish its reserves due to challenges faced in obtaining environmental licenses for drilling in Brazil. The company is drafting a development plan for an offshore project in Colombia, which recently uncovered 6 trillion cubic feet of gas, and is currently awaiting a government license to proceed.

For the Colombian project, Anjos indicated that approximately 13 million cubic meters per day of gas would be transported to Colombia through a dedicated pipeline. Moving to Africa, Petrobras plans to drill exploratory wells between July and August in an oil block where it has a stake in Sao Tome and Principe. Furthermore, drilling in another region of South Africa is anticipated in the latter half of the year, according to Anjos.

Petrobras is strategically focusing on developing opportunities in Argentina while progressing in Colombia and Africa. The potential for gas transport from Argentina and ongoing projects in Colombia reflect the company’s commitment to expanding its operational footprint. The upcoming drilling efforts in Africa also signal significant international exploration aims, enhancing Petrobras’s overall portfolio amidst challenges in Brazil.
