Iran’s UN envoy Amir Saeid Iravani reaffirmed Iran’s support for Afghan migrants, emphasizing the need for international collaboration to address Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis. He highlighted the significant support Iran provides, called for the unfreezing of Afghan assets, and urged the global community to share the burden of assistance. Iravani stressed the importance of protecting Afghan women’s rights and maintaining security in the region.
Tehran’s UN envoy, Amir Saeid Iravani, highlighted Iran’s enduring commitment to hosting Afghan migrants and refugees during a UN Security Council briefing on Afghanistan. He noted the challenges Iran has faced following the U.S. withdrawal in 2021, which left a significant increase in Afghan refugees seeking shelter within its borders.
Iravani stated that Iran’s approach to Afghan migrants is deeply humanitarian, and for over forty years, it has welcomed millions of Afghans. He detailed that “legal Afghan migrants face no restrictions in Iran, and Iranian consulates issue 5,000 visas daily.”
Addressing Afghanistan’s escalating humanitarian crisis, Iravani called for enhanced international support and reminded donor countries to fulfill their commitments to humanitarian aid. He emphasized that due to security concerns, Iran would repatriate undocumented refugees while insisting that neighboring countries like Iran and Pakistan shouldn’t face the burden alone.
The envoy advocated for the unfreezing of Afghanistan’s assets and better financial measures to support its economy. He expressed concern about the security threat from terrorist groups like ISIL-K, urging Afghanistan’s authorities to focus on counterterrorism to prevent those groups from establishing a presence.
Iravani particularly voiced alarm over the plight of Afghan women and girls, urging the authorities to lift restrictions on their rights, education, and healthcare access. He reinforced Iran’s commitment to engaging with Afghanistan on bilateral and regional levels, seeking a stable and inclusive government there.
He stated, “A stable future is achievable through sustained international support and shared responsibility,” proposing a thoughtful approach to rebuilding trust and security in Afghanistan.
As the renewal of UNAMA’s mandate approaches, he reiterated Iran’s support for the mission and urged the Security Council to facilitate its effective operations. Currently, Afghanistan is grappling with severe economic, social, political, and security issues following the Taliban’s return to power, which has worsened the humanitarian crisis due to the cessation of international aid.
Iran’s UN envoy Amir Saeid Iravani emphasized the country’s humanitarian commitment to Afghan refugees, urging international support to address Afghanistan’s ongoing crisis. He called for increased aid, unfreezing of assets, and counterterrorism efforts to stabilize the region, highlighting the urgent need for protections for women and girls. Iran continues to seek a collaborative approach to ensure lasting peace and security in Afghanistan.
