Indonesia has successfully removed over 1.3 million pieces of harmful internet content between October 2024 and March 2025, focusing on pornography and online gambling, as per the Ministry of Communications and Digital. The removal was significantly aided by public involvement in reporting such content.
Out of the total removals, 233,552 pieces were related to pornography, including 219,578 cases attributed to websites, 10,173 from Platform X (formerly Twitter), and 3,801 instances from other platforms. In addressing online gambling, 1.12 million harmful pieces were eliminated, predominantly from websites and IP addresses (1.02 million), followed by 46,207 cases from Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and 55,368 from various other platforms.
Alexander Sabar, the Ministry’s digital space oversight director-general, noted the ongoing challenge in controlling harmful online content despite significant progress. He highlighted that over 58,000 harmful pieces were dealt with in just the first eight days of March 2025, indicating a continuing issue that requires public vigilance.
The Ministry intends to enhance its AI-based monitoring system for quicker detection of harmful content and aims to work closely with global digital platforms to improve enforcement efforts.
