Dr. David Gikungu, director of the Kenya Meteorological Department, explained that the strong winds carry moisture over water bodies, with natural landscape features influencing rainfall distribution. He indicated that although the current downpour is short-lived, some areas, particularly in Coastal and Western Kenya, may continue to receive rain until Wednesday evening. He clarified that this rainfall does not signify the beginning of the long rains, typically experienced from March to May, usually commencing around mid-March.
Following prior climate variations, including El Niño and La Niña, experts caution that the cyclone might lead to prolonged rainfall, thereby heightening flood risks. Gikungu noted that while tropical cyclones like Jude can affect nearby weather patterns, there is currently no indication of a direct impact on Kenya’s rainfall. “However, with the onset of long rains still pending, the dynamics might change, and the Meteorological department will issue timely updates when that happens.”
