Cuba has achieved its first victory in the women’s world boxing championship, marked by boxer Melani Girado competing in the 57 kg category. On March 11, Girado faced Tanzanian Halima Vunjabei, who did not appear for the contest, granting Girado an easy win. The championship is taking place in Nis, Serbia, where Girado’s next match will be against the winner of the bout between Uzbekistan’s Nigina Uktamova and Georgia’s Kasumova.
In addition, Yoana Rodriguez (81 kg) and Dayira Mesa (75 kg) are scheduled to fight in the upcoming days. Rodriguez will compete against Uzbekistan’s Sokhiba Ruzmetova, while Mesa takes on Russia’s Anastasia Shamonova, with both athletes registered under the guidance of coaches Ivan Sadiel Horta del Rey and Santiago Suarez.
Coaches Horta del Rey and Suarez commented that, despite the late emergence of women’s boxing in Cuba, they embrace this challenge with enthusiasm backed by their entire support team, including the National Commission. Established cooperation has led to a strong support structure for this initiative, demonstrating their commitment to cultivating women’s boxing in the country.
