Venâncio Mondlane is appearing at the Mozambican Attorney General’s Office related to a criminal case stemming from protests against election results. His hearing was postponed to March 11. Mondlane has initiated compensation claims while facing multiple legal challenges, revealing significant unrest in Mozambique following the recent elections.
Mozambican politician Venâncio Mondlane has confirmed his attendance at the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) in Maputo for a hearing related to a criminal case. Mondlane announced on his official Facebook, stating, “See you tomorrow, at 9:00 am, at the PGR.” His advisor, Dinis Tivane, reiterated this confirmation while noting that Mondlane had just completed tasks abroad.
The hearing set for today has been postponed to Tuesday at 9:00 am following a request from Mondlane’s representative at the PGR, according to sources. Mondlane’s case is part of a broader investigation into criminal activities linked to protests he has led against election results since last October.
Mondlane has faced multiple legal challenges related to these demonstrations. The Mozambican MP has sought 1.5 million euros in damages resulting from protests in Maputo, alongside another case filed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office for 32,377,276.46 meticais concerning losses in the capital.
The PGR initiated proceedings against Mondlane, citing a self-declared “presidential decree” published in an unofficial journal which proposed measures undermining rule of law principles. The prosecutor’s office claimed this act violates the country’s Constitution, as such decrees can only be issued by authorized state bodies.
Mondlane, who was declared the second most voted candidate in the recent presidential elections, is spearheading the largest challenge to Mozambique’s election results since 1994. His party and its claims have fueled tensions, especially after violent protests led to significant casualties. Reports indicate at least 353 deaths amid clashes between police and protesters, while the government has reported 80 fatalities.
Venâncio Mondlane is set to appear before the PGR in Maputo as part of a criminal investigation related to ongoing protests against election results. The postponement of the hearing and various legal challenges faced by Mondlane underscore the tensions in the country’s political landscape following recent elections. Legal actions initiated against him raise questions about the implications of political dissent in Mozambique, especially amid accusations of police brutality and civil unrest.
