The talks were initiated following an interview with DRC President Felix Tshisekedi in the New York Times, where he highlighted interest from the Trump administration in the nation’s mineral wealth.
The DRC holds significant mineral deposits, being the world’s largest cobalt producer, contributing to over 70% of global cobalt production utilized in electric vehicle batteries. Additionally, it possesses large reserves of gold, copper, tin, lithium, and tantalum, which are valuable for various industrial applications.
Unfortunately, much of the mineral-rich eastern region is controlled by the M23 rebel group, reportedly backed by Rwanda, which is involved in smuggling minerals across the border. Any minerals agreement with the US could potentially lead to military reinforcements for Congo to help stabilize the region and address the ongoing conflict.
Congolese Senator Pierre Kandi Kalambayi has suggested in a letter to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio that American companies could gain mining rights in return for US support in military training and supply. This proposal aligns with the US’s interest in diminishing China’s influence in the DRC’s mining sector.
A spokesperson for the State Department remarked, “The DRC has a significant share of the world’s most important minerals needed for advanced technologies. The United States is open to discussing partnerships in this sector that align with the ‘America First’ program of the Trump administration.”
